It Starts with Being Heard

Sharon Dhillon, Experienced Therapist with The Bridge Counselling
Sharon Dhillon, Principal Counsellor at The Bridge Counselling Singapore

Hey there, I’m Sharon, Principal Counsellor at The Bridge Counselling.

My role, first and foremost, is to listen to you. That is where everything begins.

Not with advice or assumptions, but with the simple and human act of paying close attention to what you are saying, and sometimes to what feels harder to say.

If you are carrying something heavy, feeling stuck, or unsure about what comes next, you do not have to face it alone. We take things at your pace and focus on what matters to you and what you hope to work towards.

Together, we spend time understanding what is most important in your life. Your story, your relationships, and your experiences all have a place here.

And it starts with being truly heard.

6 Common Counselling Myths

In Singapore and across much of Asia, many of us are taught to cope quietly, rely on family, or push through on our own.

Reaching out for counselling can feel uncomfortable. You may worry about losing face, appearing weak, or burdening others.

These concerns are understandable. But they are often shaped by common misunderstandings about what counselling actually is.

If you have ever hesitated, you may recognise some of these thoughts.

In reality, counselling is for anyone facing challenges, from everyday stress and relationship difficulties to personal growth and self-understanding. You do not need a diagnosis to benefit from support.

Turning to counselling is not a sign of weakness or defeat. It reflects courage and the willingness to take responsibility for your wellbeing and work through what matters most.

Counselling is not about giving advice. It is a collaborative process that helps you uncover your own insights, clarify your direction, and move forward with confidence.

While it may feel difficult at first, expressing your thoughts and emotions in a safe space can actually bring relief, clarity, and long-term healing. Avoidance often maintains distress.

Although deeper issues may take time, many people experience meaningful shifts in just a few sessions. Research suggests that the most meaningful reduction in psychological distress tends to occur after around eight counselling sessions, with clients reporting the strongest positive changes at this point. Progress depends on your goals, readiness, and the nature of what you are facing.

In truth, more people are attending therapy than ever before, including those who appear ‘put together’ on the outside. Seeking support is a personal and often private choice grounded in strength, not shame.

Your First Step Does Not Have to Be Perfect. It Simply Has to Begin.

Begin your transformative journey to better mental health and emotional well-being with The Bridge Counselling, your partner in self-care and growth.
