Gestalt Therapy

What Is Gestalt Therapy?

Gestalt Therapy (GT) is an experiential and humanistic form of psychotherapy that focuses on holistic awareness of the present moment. The term “Gestalt” means “whole” or “form”, and this approach helps you integrate all parts of yourself, your thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and actions, into a coherent whole. Rather than dwelling on past causes or future worries, GT brings your experience into the here and now to facilitate immediate insight and change.

How Does It Work?

GT works on the principle that emotional distress often comes from “unfinished business”, unexpressed feelings or unmet needs from the past, that disrupt your ability to live fully in the present. Through active, collaborative dialogue with your counsellor, you learn to pay attention to your current state of being and how you interact with your environment. This process of heightened awareness, or Kontakt, allows you to recognise patterns and defences that interrupt genuine emotional experience. Over time, this supports greater responsibility for your choices and new ways of responding.

Is It Right for You?

Gestalt Therapy is flexible and suited for individuals who feel stuck, disconnected, or uncertain about direction. Because it focuses on the whole person, it can be helpful for those experiencing:

  • Emotional numbness or lack of clarity
  • Difficulty forming satisfying relationships or resolving conflict
  • Feeling fragmented or having low self-esteem
  • Anxiety or depression linked to unresolved experiences
  • A desire for deeper self-understanding and authenticity

What Makes It Effective?

GT moves beyond purely intellectual discussion and emphasises experiential learning. The counsellor actively guides you through exercises that bring inner experience into awareness during the session. Common techniques include:

  • The Empty Chair Technique: A way to explore dialogues with different parts of yourself, significant people, or unexpressed emotions
  • Exaggeration: Encouraging the amplification of subtle movements or expressions to uncover associated feelings
  • Body Awareness: Paying attention to physical sensations, such as tension or breathing patterns, to access emotional insight
  • “I–Thou” Language: Using direct, present-focused communication to support honesty and meaningful contact

Benefits

By engaging in the awareness-centred process of Gestalt Therapy, many people develop greater inner stability and self-support. Common benefits include:

  • A stronger sense of personal responsibility and agency
  • Increased ability to recognise and express emotions openly
  • Improved relational skills and more meaningful connections
  • A clearer, integrated understanding of mind and body
  • Greater presence and adaptability in daily life
